HEART TALK - Are You Jesus?

ARE YOU JESUS?
(Author Unknown – Sent to Pastor Jones by his good friend, Pastor George Ryan – Now Deceased)

A few years ago a group of salesmen went to a regional convention in Chicago. They had assured their wives that they would home in plenty of time for Friday night’s dinner. In their rush, with tickets and briefcases, one of these salesmen inadvertently kicked over a table which held a display of baskets of apples.

Apples flew everywhere. Without stopping, or looking back, they all managed to reach the plane in time for their nearly missed boarding – ALL BUT ONE. He paused, took a deep breath, got in touch with his feelings and experienced a twinge of compassion for the girl whose apple stand had been overturned.

He told his buddies to go on without him, waved goodbye, told one to call his wife when they arrived at their home destination and explain his taking a later flight. Then he returned to the terminal where the apples were all over the terminal floor.
He was glad he did. The 16-year-old girl was totally blind! She was softly crying, tears running down her cheeks in frustration and at the same time helplessly groping for her spilled produce as the crowd swirled about her, no one stopping and no one to care for her plight.

The salesman knelt on the floor with her, gathered up the apples, put them into the baskets and helped set up the display once more. As he did this, he noticed that many of them had become battered and bruised; the he set aside in another basket. When he had finished, he pulled out his wallet and said to the girl, “Here, please take this $20.00 for the damage we did. Are you okay?”

She nodded through her tears. He continued on with “I hope we didn’t spoil your day too badly.”

As the salesman started to walk away, the bewildered blind girl called out to him, “Mister…” He paused and turned to look back into those blind eyes. She continued, “Are you Jesus?”

He stopped in mid-stride and wondered. Then slowly he made his way to catch the later flight with that question burning and bouncing about in his soul: “Are you Jesus?’

Do people mistake you for Jesus? That’s our destiny, is it not? To be so much like Jesus that people cannot tell the difference as we live and interact with a world that is blind to His love, life and grace. If we claim to know Him, we should live, walk and act as He would. Knowing Him is more than simply quoting Scripture and going to church. IT is actually living the Word as life unfolds day to day. End of quote.

Final question: “Whose apples have you knocked over and how did you handle it?” Or, maybe someone else knocked them over. What did you do about it? Jesus said, “In that you have done it unto one of the least of these, my brethren, you have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40). Are we rushing through life at such a hectic pace that we do not have time, first of all to be careful, and second, to have time to lend a helping hand to those less fortunate that we. And, this kind of caring should not be something we do during the holiday season. This should be a way of life for us. After all, the world is looking to see JESUS manifested in those who say they are His followers.

HEART TALK - “Lord, Prop Us Up!”

Often, when I pray, I think of the old deacon who always prayed: “Lord, prop us on our leaning side.” Let me share this story with you (and thanks to whoever got this one started on the Internet. My friend, Ross Brown, sent it to me.)
“Lord, prop us up on our leaning side!” After hearing him pray that prayer, someone asked him why he prayed that prayer so fervently. His answer is classic.
“Well sir, you see, it’s like this. I got an old barn out back. It’s been there a long time. It’s withstood a lot of weather. It’s gone through a lot of storms and it’s stood for many years.”
He paused for a moment and then continued. “It’s still standing, but one day I noticed it was leaning to one side a bit, so I went and got some pine poles and propped it up on its leaning side so it wouldn’t fall.”
Another thoughtful pause, before he continued. “Then I got to thinking about that and how much I was like that old barn. I’ve been around a long time. I have withstood a lot of life’s storms. I have withstood a lot of bad weather in life. I have withstood a lot of hard times. I have developed a bunch of bad habits, and I’m still standing too.”
“But,” he said, “I find myself leaning to one side from time to time, so I like to ask the Lord to prop us up on our leaning side, because I figure a lot of us get to leaning at times. Sometimes we get into the bad habit of leaning toward anger, leaning toward bitterness, leaning toward hatred, not taking care of ourselves, leaning toward a lot of things that we shouldn’t, so we need to pray…LORD, PROP US UP ON OUR LEANING SIDE SO THAT WE WILL ONCE AGAIN, STAND STRAIGHT AND TALL.” (Author Unknown)
Having grown up in the country and in small towns in West Tennessee, I am familiar with old weather-beaten barns that have taken a beating for a lot of years and are now leaning toward an eventual collapse. Life does have a way to beating on us. Life isn’t easy. The storms come. Strong winds blow. The barn represents our life.
Think about it! What if we didn’t have our loving heavenly Father to turn to for some propping up…for the support we need to bear up under in the storms of life? What if we didn’t have the privilege of prayer (and maybe we should use it more than we do)? What if we didn’t have the promises of HIS WORD as “pine poles” to brace our life so that we don’t fall? And, what if we didn’t have GOD’s love, grace, mercy and loving kindness to prop us up when anger, bitterness, hatred and such come against us. These are the “sins of the flesh” that erode the planks of our life and cause to fall on our knees to pray the prayer – “LORD, PROP US UP ON OUR LEANING SIDE.”
The struggle is the same for everyone. To take the egotistical, and hypocritical, position of the Pharisees of Jesus’ day (and they haven’t all died off), is sheer folly. To do so is to live in the world of virtual reality…NOT TRUE REALITY. Why not stop for a brief moment and pray the prayer of this old farmer? Pray, “Lord, prop me up on my leaning side, because I AM leaning.”
Hopefully, this HEART TALK has been a blessing to you. If it has, I would love to hear from you. If you would like to share your burdens with me for some added prayer support, please do so. Mrs. Jones and I are here for you. He cared! We care!

Heart Talk Sharing My Heart With You

An online sister in Christ who happens to live in the United Kingdom (Linda Van Heerden) recently sent me an article which has moved me enough that I wish to share it with you as a HEART TALK…my heart speaking to yours (hopefully). And, if it does, I would be thrilled to hear from you.

LOOKING FORWARD
(Read Philippians 3:13)

One day, in an orchard, seven-year-old Walter noticed an owl sleeping on a branch. Thinking it would make a wonderful pet he approached quietly and grabbed its leg. In a flurry of beating wings, wild eyes and frightening cries, the bird struggled so the boy threw it down and stamped it to death. Horrified by his actions, he fled. When he returned later to bury it, each shovel full of earth was mixed with tears of regret. The incident haunted him and he told no one about it – till years later when it awakened in him a fresh appreciation for life. All the promises in the world could not bring back that one owl, but through its death a world of animals was born. The boy is gone, but his legacy lives on in the drawings of Walter Elias, also known as Walt Disney.
Charles Dickens said, ‘Reflect on your blessings of which every man has plenty, not on your past misfortunes of which all men have some.’ Learn from your past, then ‘FOCUS ON LOOKING FORWARD.’ Paul Harvey writes: “The relationships we have entered, stayed in, or ended, taught us important lessons. Some of us have emerged from painful circumstances with strong insights about who we are and what we want. Our mistakes are necessary! Our frustrations, failures…stumbling attempts at growth and progress, necessary too! Each step of the way we learned. We went through exactly what we needed to become what we are today. Is your past a mistake? No. Your mistake is mistaking that for the truth.’ God can ‘reframe’ your past in the light of the grace and mercy that brought you to where you are today. So learn from it and move on. End quote.
The lesson for us to learn from this story and from the wisdom shared by Charles Dickens and Paul Harvey is one that truly needs to be learned by all. We’ve all “killed our owl” at some point in our life. Mistakes are common to the human element in all of us. No person has lived in this world without making mistakes…bad choices. And, we have lived with regret, horrified by bad choices…which always have painful consequences. It is encouraging to know that WE WENT THROUGH EXACTLY WHAT WE NEEDED TO GO THROUGH IN ORDER TO BECOME WHAT WE ARE TODAY. How encouraging it is to know that in those valleys of our life, our GOD is there. How encouraging to know that HIS GRACE IS SUFFICIENT and that “His mercy endureth forever.”
As I close, I am encouraged by Mr. Harvey’s question and his answer: “Is your past a mistake?” His answer was a resounding “No!” And, he really sealed it with “Your mistake is mistaking that for the truth” – your past is a mistake. Never! We fail so that we will learn to not make the same choice in the future. We fall in order to understand our fallibility and our need for God’s strong hand to lift us up. We hurt so that we may learn to feel the pain of others. OUR PAST IS NOT A MISTAKE! Thank God for all the lessons that we have learned from our bad choices.
